The Property
- Atmosphere
The superb location of Booby’s Bay Cottage really defines the house. Set in a large plot, one of only four houses along Booby’s Bay, the property is a fantastic location for a beach holiday. Inside, Booby’s Bay Cottage retains plenty of character, but modernised now to be very welcoming and practical. With the garage converted to house a sixth bedroom and large ensuite, the house really can cater for two or even three families with ease. The outside space and possibilities are so numerous that indoors or out with the weather, Booby’s Bay provides a very special home.
- Sleeping
The two main bedrooms at Boobys Bay Cottage lie at either end of the main landing upstairs. One double room is furnished with a double bed and has a wash basin. The sea side of the room opens out onto the balcony. There are breathtaking views across the full width of the panorama – from Treyarnon, past Constantine, Booby’s Bay straight ahead, and Trevose Head away to the right.
At the far end of the landing is the super king room – made up from two twin beds or as required. No balcony here, but still stunning views, and a modern ensuite shower room. Both rooms have plenty of wardrobe space and drawers.
Next door to the ensuite is a twin room with basin, drawers and built-in wardrobe. Again the views over the sea and garden are good. The single room is further back along the landing, past the bathroom which is located at the back of the house. Half-way up the stairs, there is another twin room. Large and spacious, with hanging space and a wash basin, this is a comfortable room – although without the special views of the front-facing rooms.
Downstairs, down a corridor off the sitting room, can be found the last bedroom. Recently converted with large ensuite, this room again can be made up as a Super King or as two twin beds. It has an interesting stain glass window, a wall mounted flat screen TV, and its own outside door onto the sheltered side terrace. This makes the room almost self-sufficient. It has been converted to suit all but particularly for disabled guests or those who do not want to tackle the stairs – both in terms of access and also in respect of the facilities in the large shower room. It is a very welcome addition for all.
- Bathrooms
The main bathroom is located off the landing upstairs. It has a bath, basin, loo and heated towel rail but is fairly small. The ensuite upstairs has a large walk in shower cubicle, basin and loo. Downstairs off the kitchen there is another shower. Used particularly to shower off after the beach, it is also useful at all times. The ensuite off the downstairs double is large and well equipped again with a large modern shower unit, loo and basin. Finally, there is a separate cloakroom off the small hall near the front door.
- Living
The very large centre of Booby’s Bay Cottage is split in two by double glass doors. They lead into the spacious dual aspect sitting room furnished with an open fireplace, TV and DVD, video. Two new large sofas dominate the room, providing plenty of space for all to relax. Other comfortable chairs and tables are provided. French doors open into the sun room which has a window seat – a useful room for sitting and eating when the weather is not quite fine enough to be outside. A door leads from here to the outside, first into a small open but covered area, and then onto the lovely patio area that stretches around the house.
- Kitchen and Dining
The large and well-equipped kitchen contains an electric cooker, microwave, fridge/freezer, second large fridge and secondary freezer, washing machine, tumble-dryer, dishwasher, as well as plenty of cook and tableware. There is a walk-in larder for you to store dry goods. The breakfast table in front of the window is well loved by children – lined up for boiled eggs and toast with the glorious garden and ocean ahead of them. Its also a nice place to enjoy a glass of wine with whoever is cooking that evening.
Next door is the dining room – adjoined with the sitting room. A round wooden table provides seating for up to twelve. There is a large in-built dresser along one wall – containing glasses, more formal cutlery (in a drawer that can open into the kitchen as well as the dining room) and table linen. Windows open out onto the terrace outside.
There are many other places to serve meals at Booby’s – the sunroom, on the terrace at the front, or on the side terrace. Or if the weather is particularly blowy, in one of the other sheltered locations.
- Facilities
The house is heated by storage heaters that work well when needed, and now has wireless broadband. There is washing machine, tumble-dryer and dishwasher in the kitchen. There are 2 TVs, DVD and video.
Outside
The garden is large, laid to lawn with ample space for football, cricket, golf practice, and loads of space to run about. The main terrace runs around the front of the house, with a wide low wall as border – perfect for sitting to relax, eating ad hoc meals from or just to dry towels and wetsuits over. At the front side of the garden is a raised rounded wall – the ‘ridge’, perfect for sitting and looking out to sea and endless fun for the children. Steps up and over on the right, and a gate on the left, both lead across the headland to the cliff edge.
The outside tables can be used in various locations – on the front wide terrace, on the grass to the south side, on the sheltered side terrace or behind the house on the small lawn. Or there is a sunken and paved area near the gate to the beach – perfect for lunch if a real wind blows when you are staying. High quality resin sunloungers are provided.
A new stone built shed can be used to store surfboards and surfboards. There is enough space for three or four cars in the driveway at the front.
Nearby
Booby’s Bay Cottage is located in dramatic position between the golf course and the sea. The beaches at Booby’s Bay and Constantine Bay are moments away. Criss-cross paths head away from the house. Head left towards Constantine, and the easiest ways down to Booby’s. The cliffs and rocks yield many routes down to the beach – some quicker, and some easier than others. To the right, there are two smaller pebble beaches, before heading over a stile onto Trevose Head.
The main beach is covered at high tide, but as the tide retreats a stretch of golden sand is left, with the most perfect framing of rocks and pools. Many hours can be spent swimming in the pools or just exploring.
Walks are great in both directions – around Trevose Head, to Mother Ivey’s and back. Or head south to Constantine and on to Treyarnon and beyond.
The short course at Trevose runs down behind Booby’s, so you will often hear the noise of golf shots being played. The club house is a 10 minute walk or short drive away.
For shopping, St Merryn is nearby by car – or you can walk to Constantine Bay Stores along the beach in 15 minutes or so. There are a number of restaurants in St Merryn – from take-away through good family cafes to very fine dining.
Padstow is close, for elegant shopping, art galleries and all manner of dining and food. Here you can also catch the ferry across to Rock and Polzeath or just take a boat trip.
But with so much to do all round Booby’s, we would suggest you try to stay nearby as much as possible.
