The Property

  • Atmosphere

Pensile House Cottage is located just above Nailsworth in South Gloucestershire and deep into the Cotswolds. It has been refurbished to provide luxurious accommodation for a couple on a quiet break away, and also provides a travel cot.

The cottage's as central heating provides cosy warmth all year round and the terraces and small lawns provide a wonderful hot and sheltered location to relax and enjoy. The bathroom incorporates the original stables stall divider - giving privacy and character. There is engineered oak throughout the ground-floor and luxurious natural flooring in the bedroom above. The wonderful town of Nailsworth is 2-3 minutes walk - with a fantastic range of restaurants and independent shops. Cirencester, Bath, Cheltenham and Bourton-On-The-Water, Stow-On-The-Wold are all in striking distance.

  • Sleeping

The one bedroom is upstairs in the original part of the cottage. Dark grey sisal flooring and a comfortable king size bed make the room rather special. A chest of drawers and a peg rail for hanging are provided - as are a variety of lighting options to suit your mood. The views through the beautiful stone mullion windows across the heavily wooded valley are pretty special. There is a small flat screen TV and DVD upstairs.

NB The stairs are quite narrow and steep, with a rail on the outside wall.

  • Bathrooms

The bathroom is downstairs but is a good size and luxurious. The original stables stall divider splits the dual aspect room. There is a large steel fitted bath with powerful shower and curtain over. It's a perfect place to have a long and decadent soak! There is also a heated towel rail and basin.

  • Kitchen and Living

The living area is large with double-height ceiling at one end, formed from the beautifully presented exposed stonework of the old stables, and huge french doors at the other. Along the south wall windows open up to the great views across the wooded valley. The kitchen is furnished with an electric cooker. There is a Belfast sink and an under counter fridge with small but usable freezer section at the top.

There is a table for 4, a double sofa and an arm chair. The flat screen TV is wall-mounted and there is also a Cambridge Audio dock that allows you to play music from your smartphone/Iphone/IPOD.

  • Facilities

The cottage has gas-fired central heating. There are 2 flat screen TVs and 2 DVDs, a bluetooth dock music system and wireless broadband. There is a dishwasher and washing machine - drying is via a clothes horse, or outside line. The fridge has a small freezer box at the top. A nespresso coffee machine is provided. There is no landline, but mobile signal is generally excellent.

There is Fibre Internet direct to the cottage, giving speeds of over 200 mbit/s download and 50 mbit/s upload.

Outside

The outside space at Pensile House Cottage is pretty special. Cotswold stone walls surround the property and its terraces and 2 mature and heavily producing fig trees give a very Mediterranean feel to things. The south-facing slope of this wooded valley really picks up the best of the sun and warmth, and the terraces and lawns surrounding the cottage are perfect for relaxing when you are not out and about. Perhaps don't do anything at all during your stay - you may be tempted!

There are 2 terraces for eating or drinking out - one outside the French doors, and the other on the full south side of the cottage. There is parking for 1 car in the lay-by off the quiet lane and plenty of free parking down Pensile Road if needed. Step lights automatically ease your way to the front door when you arrive - quite magical!

Nearby

When you stay at Pensile House Cottage you are in the heart of a wonderful area to explore - and plenty of it can be done by foot if you would rather abandon the car. Nailsworth itself is just 2-3 minutes down Pensile Road and provides plenty of wonderful food and present shopping as well as some great restaurants.

Hobbs House bakery (star of the Fabulous Baker Boys TV show) is just at the bottom of the hill - perfect for your daily bread and all manner of other delights, as well as an upstairs daytime bistro restaurant. Just across the road is Williams - possibly the best deli/fish shop-restaurant in Britain or indeed the world - buy your fish, veg, deli counter staples, or stop by for oysters and champagne for lunch in side their wonderfully atmospheric restaurant or out on the sunny terrace. There are plenty of other restaurants - with the Wild Garlic, Wilder and Williams being exceptional. For coffee, there is also a bit of competition: the Canteen is very special indeed with its amazing decoration and secret courtyard; or just wander around 4 or 5 other independent coffee shops. Or head to Domestic Science an amazing homeware shop (featured regularly in the press), the yellow-tail bookshop or an array of antique and jewellery shops. Or drop in to Raffles Fine Wine for a glass of wine by the fire and to buy your week's individual tipple.

Further afield, Minchinhampton itself and its fantastic 'common' is up the 'ladder' (an alpine zig-zag of a road) from Pensile Road - come here for walking or kite-flying. Stroud with its award winning Saturday morning farmers market and alternative feel has endless possibilities and it is just a short 4 mile drive over the common or along the valley below. Why not rent bikes from Five Valley Cycles or The Bike Works nearby -  there are fantastic cycle routes, for instance you can ride along the old railway (now a maintained cycle route) to Stroud in about 20 minutes, flat and easy!

Cirencester and the rest of the northern Cotrswolds are close-by: 15-20 minutes to Cirencester; 40 minutes to Cheltenham; 40 minutes to Bourton-On-The-Water and 50 minutes to Stow-on-the-Wold and Winchcombe. Bath is 35-40 minutes south of Nailsworth - probably the most cosmopolitan shopping out of London.

Pensile House Cottage is about 1 hour and 40 minutes from West London, via M4 junction 15 at Swindon, the A417, and Cirencester. Train stations can be found at Stroud, Kemble and Swindon.

We had a great time at Pencile Cottage. It was clean, comfortable and very warm. Nailsworth is an interesting town with several independent shops and a selection of cafes and restaurants. I would recommend walking up through Box Wood to Box Village and on to Minchinhampton and back. We enjoyed dinner at the Amalfi restaurant and a curry from Passage to India takeaway so if you don’t feel like cooking… 5 stars for Pencile Cottage and Nailsworth!

A lovely property and close to town.

Stayed: 15th Sep 2023

The stay is better than the picture show. Well styled, a unique property you can walk into and feel at home.

Thank you, the fig tree was a lovely treat to see. We had a really calm relaxing weekend.

Nice cottage, nice area, shops and restaurants near by. Everything was ok Thanks

Stayed: 20th Jun 2023

We loved our stay at Pensile House Cottage! It was our first AirBnB experience and it will be the first of many in the years to come! Quiet, private, picturesque, well appointed, beautiful decor, great location and perfect patio with a view all made our stay wonderful.

Stayed: 6th Jun 2023

The cottage was very comfortable with good access to Nailsworth and the surrounding areas. The bed was very comfortable and a good size. Nice bathroom.

Stayed: 5th May 2023

This was our second visit to Pensile Cottage which we think is really lovely. It’s well equipped and very nicely decorated. We know the area well and love coming back and the cottage is a real home from home and will definitely be back.

Stayed: 8th Sep 2022

We had a great time in Pensile House Cottage. Everything was high spec, good quality. perfect location with a couple of really great dog friendly pubs in a lovely town👍. Perfect for exploring the Cotswolds. We liked all the modern essentials e.g bluetooth speaker! Super comfy bed, really relaxing space, and fantastic outdoor space too. Great week there!

Stayed: 24th Jun 2022

Can’t rate this property highly enough – this was our first trip to the Cotswolds and our first time using AirBnB – loved the area and plan to return and very happy with AirBnB service. We took our two small dogs so it was very important for us to have them safe. The garden is dog safe and they had lots of room to wonder about & relax. There are fantastic dog walks straight from the cottage or further afield if you want to drive. The whole area seems to be dog friendly which was wonderful – dogs welcome in all local pubs / cafes and shops. The cottage is lovely, it had everything we wanted – we ate in most of the time and we found the kitchen area to be well equipped. Remember to take all your basics with you including tea, coffee, sugar, salt / pepper etc. Someone else in a previous post made a comment about lack of storage space – have to say this didnt bother us, there seemed to be adequate room. The bedroom is relaxing and it was lovely and quiet with blackout blinds so nice and dark at night / dawn – the bed super comfortable (we both slept so well!) The shower over the bath was amazing! you are provided with two huge fluffy bath towels (thank you!) Internet connection was great, good mobile phone connection and a decent sized TV with lots of channels. The garden (besides being good for the dogs) is a sun magnet! We spent lots of afternoons out on the sun loungers enjoying the sun and the views across the valley. There is another holiday property next door but its well screened off and to be honest we didnt even really notice it the whole time we were there. The cottage feels very secluded even though there are other houses nearby. Someone made a comment in a previous post about being disturbed by the industrial estate below the cottage and it spoiling their view… there is an industrial estate in the valley below the cottage but we didnt find it noisy or disturbing, you can only really see it if you peer over the wall to physically look for it – why do that when the main view is so beautiful?! The town is literally a 5 min stroll down the lane, it has everything you could want for self catering and for those wanting to eat out. The shops are really nice and plenty of cafes to sit and have coffee – locals very friendly. For days out – there is so much to do and the bigger towns such as Cirencester & Stroud are wonderful. We were lucky to be in the area to go to some local farmers markets and they are well worth a visit! The smaller villages around are absolutely beautiful. Parking is fine by the way – I read a few negative comments and dont really understand why anyone had issues. We have a SUV size car and had no problems at all, didnt find it tight to park and could turn carefully in the road to drive down the lane so dont let previous negative comments put you off or worry you. The host Patrick is super friendly and on hand if you need him. All in all we loved the place and fully intend to book again and continue our exploration of this lovely area.

An excellent property that felt like it was in the countryside yet with a great little town very nearby with lovely bars and restaurants.

Stayed: 21st May 2021

This is a very charming cottage with nice views and a lovely gated yard, great for dogs! If you have nice weather, it’s the perfect indoor/outdoor experience. It is also a super convenient location in Nailsworth for the town or to access walks.

Stayed: 14th May 2021

From Visitor Book: We were delayed for a year by covid which changed our circumstances somewhat.  However the Cottage, Nailsworth and surrounding area suited our needs exactly.  Long dogs walks, relaxing surroundings and reasonable weather helped to recharge depleted batteries.  Our two springers had endless fun and actually drained theirs!!  Will we be back?  We ought to really, we never got the hang of the light switches completely!

Stayed: 1st Mar 2021

From Visitor Book: 6 weeks of heaven here, completely restored.  Wish I could take the cottage with me, perfect in every way.

Stayed: 8th Oct 2020

This cottage was just right for our little weekend getaway. We chose this cottage for its location and I’m so pleased we did… it was perfect!Being walking distance from all the lovely shops and restaurants in Nailsworth was brilliant. But also walking distance to some amazing countryside for long walks with our dog. The cottage itself had everything we needed. Lovely bedroom, bathroom and outside area. Would highly recommend and would visit again.

Stayed: 14th Aug 2020

Great location, walking distance to Nailsworth but still managing to feel remote and secluded. Views from the Cottage were also fantastic! Lots of great walks to take advantage of and plenty of restaurants very close by. There is also a supermarket (Morrisons) roughly half a mile away which is very convenient. Overall, this is a great little stay for a couple’s getaway in the Cotswolds!

Stayed: 6th Jul 2020

We had a fantastic stay in Pensile cottage. The grounds are stunning and the cottage itself is immaculate. Fantastic location and lovely cosy cottage, we had such great time and will be back soon.

Stayed: 2nd Aug 2019

This cottage totally lived up to all our expectations and more! It’s been tastefully furnished throughout & very well equipped. The outside space is totally dog proof & this is really important for us as our little jack Russell can usually find a way out somewhere! We had some very relaxing afternoons on the sun loungers without worrying about where the naughty terrier might have escaped too! I would highly recommend this cottage & we will definitely be returning very soon……. absolute gem of a find!

Stayed: 7th Jun 2019
