Key Features
Atmosphere
Sunset is a superb open plan beach house, cut into the hill with great views down over Porthcothan Bay and the surrounding coastline. The decked terrace runs right around the front and side of the house - and now linking to a large tiled terrace at the rear of the property, great for entertaining and soaking up the sun. From the front decking terrace large sliding doors lead into the living/dining space, really opening the house up to the sea air and fantastic views. Once inside you get evocative snapshots of the surrounding landscape at every turn, with well positioned windows and roof lights. It has a simple contemporary aesthetic with carefully chosen bursts of colour all over the house. With the new conservatory, terrace, and cladding, Sunset really is the perfect place for your holiday, and to watch the sun setting over the bay, either by the warmth of the wood burner or out on the terrace (it's not hard to see how it got its name!).
Sleeping
There are four bedrooms at Sunset, two on the ground floor and two on the first. The first is a single situated down the corridor leading off the open plan kitchen/dining space. It is furnished with an attractive bleached wood bedside table and side chair and has pleasant views out over the fields behind. This room can also be made up as a twin on request with a pull out bed available under the single bed. At the end of the same corridor is the second ground floor bedroom which is a super king. It features a tall chest of drawers, bedside tables and side chair, with large sliding doors that allow easy access to the private back terrace and garden beyond. There is also a useful ensuite shower room with loo and basin.
The two further bedrooms are on the first floor – a single to the right of the staircase and a super king straight ahead. The super king has a contemporary glass Juliet balcony with spectacular views down over Porthcothan Bay and a well positioned roof light. It is furnished with neutral, simple furnishings - two bedside tables, and a wooden chest of drawers. The other bedroom on the first floor is a single room, again with roof light and window. It's furnished with a chest of drawers, bedside tables and a side chair. Both windows feature views out over the back garden and fields beyond.
Bathrooms
On the first floor down the corridor leading off the kitchen /dining space is the family bathroom with bath, inbuilt shower, basin and loo – it’s a spacious modern bathroom with a cheerful coloured floor. The downstairs super king is the only bedroom with ensuite and features a shower, loo and again has a colourful chequered floor. Up the stairs on the 1st floor is the last bathroom - with bath, loo and basin, it is well lit with good natural light streaming through a roof light.
Kitchen/Dining/Living
Once through the sliding doors from the decked terrace, you enter straight into the large open plan kitchen diner with a dominant country style wooden table and contemporary kitchen. The kitchen units are arranged in a ‘U’ shape with the dining table in the centre. There is a vibrant orange Smeg fridge also built into a recess in the wall. Around the corner from the kitchen/diner is the sitting room. Featuring some superb views, the sitting room is spacious with a sofa 3 armchairs and contemporary wood burner. Fitted shelving provides good space for games and books. A TV provides the entertainment as do the multiple windows where the sea can be enjoyed from all angles. The whole kitchen/dining/living area benefits from the large sliding doors which can easily be opened to invite the outside in.
Towards the back of the house there is also a smaller more private second sitting room with sofa and TV. This provides a much needed quieter space for a bit of time out from the main activity of the open plan living area.
From this room a large and sunny conservatory is also accessible with a further sofa to relax on and enjoy the sun. The renovations of 2018 have made the conservatory into a key part of the house.
Facilities
Directly off the kitchen is the utility space with freezer, washing machine, microwave and space for coats, beach gear etc. The kitchen features a large Smeg fridge and dishwasher, with gas oven and hob. There is oil fired central heating and wireless broadband.
Outside
Sunset has a spectacular decked terrace which provides a superb elevated area to make the most of the sea views. Out the back of the house is a large terrace with sunny lawned garden beyond. The conservatory opens out onto the terrace - a great space for entertaining and relaxtation. The upper section of the lawn enjoys excellent views down over the nearby coastline. The garden is large and can work well for multiple uses – great for ball games and sunbathing. It’s a neat private area, bordered down its entire length by an attractive Cornish stone wall. The garden also backs onto picturesque open fields, adding to the feeling of the large plot and open space. There is ample parking for 2-3 cars in the driveway, but a little care is needed when backing out onto the road.
Nearby
Sunset is located three quarters of the way up the hill from the beach at Porthcothan. The beach is a short walk down the road but care needs to be taken as there is no pavement and it can get busy in high season. It’s also easy to park down at the beach car park if preferred, or convenient to use just to drop off kids and equipment. The beach is a fantastic stretch of sand particularly at low tide
Porthcothan Stores supplies papers, milk and bread and is located on the path from the road through to the beach. Up the hill on the other side (Padstow-side) is the Tredrea pub, providing refreshment and reliable pub food, with amazing views down over the bay from its large terrace.
The beach at Porthcothan is particularly special. At low tide, the beach opens out with huge rock pillars, caves and pools. It is great to explore. It is also very good for swimming and surfing. Around the south headland, can be found the Trescore Islands, wonderful for swimming in the shallow lagoon and more like the Med in good weather. Good walking can be found further south, towards the fascinating rocky inlet of Porthmear and on to Bedruthan Steps and Mawgan Porth. To the north, the walk along the headland to Treyarnon is particularly beautiful.
Newquay Airport is only 10 minutes away, as is Jamie Oliver’s restaurant at Watergate Bay. Padstow is nearby for shopping and dining, only 10 minutes by car to the north.

It really is one of the best houses we have ever stayed in – especially in how the kitchen is equipped and the beds and bedding. I would like to say thanks very much for your incredibly swift action when the loo went out of action. The caretaker was brilliant coming so quickly and sorting it so quickly too. It was very impressive how you were on it immediately.
