Key Features
Atmosphere
Trephyl sits in a prime position right on the cliff side looking out over the beach to the sea. It's so close to the cliff edge in fact that its front terraces actually blend into the coastal path that leads to the beach. This proximity to the beach offers up unique views from all over the house - when the tide is in there can't be many better spots to sit and relax while watching the waves crash against rocks; or when the tide is out, you can view the broad expanse of wonderful Porthcothan and all its beach fun. The house can sleep 8 in 4 bedrooms, or 10 with the use of bunk beds (please ask if you wish these to be made-up). A large spacious kitchen/dining space and separate sitting room all positioned to make the most of the views, make this house an attractive spot and its proximity to the sea is hard to beat.
Sleeping
There are four bedrooms at Trephyl, all on the first floor, and all leading from the spacious landing. The master bedroom is en - suite with king size bed, bedside tables, TV & DVD and a built in wardrobe, and located to the front of the house, across the landing upstairs. There are spectacular sea views right down over the beach - perfect for watching surfers on the incoming tides or members of your group enjoying beach life down below. It also benefits from an en-suite bathroom with loo and bath with shower over. At the top of the stairs, the first bedroom is straight ahead, a double with one bedside table and built in wardrobes and benefits from good natural light from the sunny rear of the house, with its window overlooking the back patio and garden. The second is next door, with double bed, bedside tables, fitted basin and built in wardrobes. This bedroom is to the front of the house and commands unobstructed views out over the bay. The fourth and final bedroom features two 2ft 6 single beds (these can be made up as a King on request) with an optional Bunk Bed (again only made-up on request) tucked into the corner with a tiny portal window looking out over the beach. It also features a chest of drawers, basin and built in wardrobe.
Bathrooms
There are 3 bathrooms at Trephyl as well as an upstairs and downstairs cloakroom. The downstairs bathroom is a wet room featuring electric shower only - positioned just off the back door so easy for showering off after coming straight up from the beach. Next door to the wet room is the downstairs cloakroom with loo and basin, all located in the large and very useful utility area. Upstairs is the family bathroom with a bath and shower over, with a fixed screen. There is also a basin, and a loo in a separate cloakroom next door. The master bedroom also has an en- suite bathroom - featuring bath with shower over and loo.
Kitchen and Dining
The kitchen is built in a U shape with full length fridge and double oven, with one being a microwave/combination oven). A large window over the sink makes washing up that bit more palatable with beach life going on in front of you to keep you distracted. There is also a dishwasher and electric hob with extractor hood over, and a stainless steel one and half sink. The kitchen is modern, clean and functional, with a modern black good quality worktop. There is a good selection of cookware and gadgets and cooks should be at home.
The dining area has a large wooden dining table which easily seats 8 and can accommodate 10 when needed. There are sliding doors out to the sunny back terrace and a large picture window out to the front framing the sea beyond and beach below. There is an attractive wooden sideboard alongside the table, with a small flat screen TV for when you tire of the views. The whole room has a great feel.
Living
The room is dominated by the breathtaking views. It has two large comfy sofas angled towards the TV and open fire. It also features a further two seater leather sofa and wooden rocking chair positioned at the opposite end of the room - both sat in prime position to take in the compelling sea views. There is a large 40 inch TV and DVD with a selection of games and books on the integrated shelves either side of the fireplace. The living space also features a door out to the front terraces which can be opened to let the sound of crashing waves below fill the room.
Facilities
The house has oil central heating, wireless broadband and landline. There is a very large and useful utility room next door to the dining room, providing ample space for dealing with sandy beach gear, the inevitable washing and drying (separate machines), and additional white goods. It features a chest freezer and washing machine and dryer.
Outside
Trephyl is perfectly positioned set into the cliff side with terraced front gardens that slope down to the coast path and cliffs edge (care must be taken with young children or dogs as there is no fence at the bottom of the garden). The grassy lawn skirts the base of the house and provides ample spots to sunbathe and take in the sea air. There is a level paved terrace leading straight out of the house and a private sheltered sunny back paved terrace which benefits from the evening sunshine. There is parking for 2 cars directly outside the house and a 3rd in the garage itself as needed.
Nearby
The house is close to the coast path and the beach can be accessed by turning right at the front facing the sea, and walking towards the dunes for a few metres and using the steps that lead directly down onto to the beach.
Porthcothan is a particularly special beach. At low tide, the beach opens out with huge rock pillars, caves and pools. It is great to explore. It is also very good for swimming and surfing. Around the south headland, and just along to the sea-side of Trephyl, can be found Golden Burn beach - adjoined to Porthcothan at mid and low tides, but a separate beach at higher tides. With secret caves and rocks to climb, as well as a sheltered aspect, its a great spot. Further round are the Trescore Islands, wonderful for swimming in the shallow lagoon and more like the Med in good weather. Good walking can be found further south, towards the fascinating rocky inlet of Porthmear and on to Bedruthan Steps and Mawgan Porth. To the north, the walk along the headland to Treyarnon is particularly beautiful.
Porthcothan Stores supplies papers, milk and bread in season and is located on the path from the road through to the beach, or from Trephyl just back along the cliff path to the top of the beach. You can sit out here at the little cafe, and enjoy a cup of coffee and snacks, and you can also order pasties and bread/croissants - well worth getting to know on your 1st day!
Newquay Airport is only 10 minutes away, and Bodmin station about 30-40 minutes by car. Padstow is nearby for shopping and dining, only 10-15 minutes by car, depending on summer traffic, to the north. St Merryn is closer (just 5-10 minutes ), with a bakery, grocery stores and Post Office.
There are so many great restaurants in easy striking distance - Padstow with Stein's restaurants, Paul Ainsworth's No 6 and Rojano's, another Ainsworth venture and Prawn on the Lawn; and then near St Merryn, Trevibban Mill has a fantastic restaurant, Barnaby's (which also sells great English wine), the Cornish Arms for good pub food and atmosphere, Duchy Grub at Higher Harlyn Park and Rafferty's in the village itself. Close as well is Zacry's at Watergate Bay and the Scarlet Hotel at Mawgan Porth. You can eat out very well every day of your stay - or alternatively, just park the car up, and enjoy the views from Trephyl's terrace with a glass of white and some barbecued fish!

We had a lovely comfortable stay at Trephyl. There was everything we needed. The bed was really comfortable and the house well equipped.
The window in the kitchen wasn’t working and we found a lot of flys gathering on the window and we couldn’t open it to let them out.
The security lock outside for the key wasn’t easy to use so we’re unable to use it.
Raintree Says:
Glad you had a good stay.
Thank you for you concerns about the window, new hinges will be fitted soon this year. Sorry the keysafe was difficult to use, it is of a tricky type - but we have checked and it does seem to be working OK.

Although boiler was on after 3 of us showered, water was cold for next 2 adults. Love the house though and the view is to die for. House has everything you want.
Raintree Says:
Glad you enjoyed your stay at Trephyl.
Thank you for the heads up about the boiler. We believe the caretaker has sorted everything out.

We loved our stay at Trephyl. It was such a comfortable house with a heavenly view (esp from our bedroom and in the rain!) and also very quick access to the beach down the steps. My girls and whippet loved exploring the caves on the beach too and it was a good house to entertain our friends who were staying in the bay. We would definitely consider staying there in the summer

The house was great and in a lovely position. What could have been improved? – Perhaps supplying loo roll and kitchen roll for a week but as you can see I am struggling to find fault!

Best house ever – fab location!

Thanks for the excellent service from yourselves and the maintenance lads who were polite and got the job done in double quick time on a leak under the sink. The cake and cuppa were also a nice touch, keep up the good work.
