The Property

  • Atmosphere

The large proportions of Trevethan are immediately apparent on arrival. From good-sized kitchen, to huge drawing room, and separate sitting room, as well as large formal dining room – Trevethan House has style. The property has been maintained well, has a good level of décor and is well equipped throughout. There is always room for any members of your party to find a quiet space away from others, and there is no better house for ‘sardines’ or other such children’s favourites. A very special house for family gatherings, or groups of friends and colleagues. A really lovely house to escape to.

  • Sleeping

Bedrooms at Trevethan are located on the 1st and 2nd floors. On the 1st floor there are three spacious bedrooms. One is a huge twin room with dual aspect and views over the walled garden and to the beach. This room is well furnished with large wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside lights and tables and a wash basin with light and shaver socket. A large room is next door with a very comfortable king-sized bed and super views of the beach. Bedside tables and lamps, chair, chest of drawers and large wardrobe complete this room.

The spacious master bedroom, with antique furniture, has a really comfortable super king size bed and even a chaise longue. There is also a wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside tables and lamps, sofa and chairs with acres of floor space - all making this a really special room with great views across the cliffs, the beach and the Atlantic Ocean. The spacious en-suite bathroom, which can also be accessed from the landing, comprises a bath, shower cubicle, wash basin, loo and airing cupboard.

A further flight of quite steep stairs leads first to a good-sized twin room under the eaves with attractive beams exposed. This bedroom has comfortable single beds. The window here looks out over the garden, to the beach and the sea. A chest of drawers, bedside tables, lamps, a wash basin and wardrobe make this a great room for adults or teenagers alike. A few more stairs to the top landing and you will find the three other bedrooms, the shower room and loo.

The first room is a single, with hanging space, shelves, drawers, a bedside table and lamp. Adjacent to this is a walk-through room allowing you to reach the twin room at the far end of the house. The twin room has a chest of drawers, wardrobe, bedside tables and reading lamps, a cot and a lovely view up the hill. The “through room” has twin beds. On this floor there is also a shower room and a separate loo and hand basin.

  • Bathrooms

There are two main bathrooms at Trevethan. The first can be found at the top of the main stairs, to the left. It has a large bath with hand-held shower over, basin and loo. Washing machine and tumble dryer are also found here. On the 1st floor proper, the large ensuite/family bathroom is found. It can be accessed both off the master bedroom and off the landing. It is huge, with an enormous window overlooking the garden down to the beach and sea. The floor is thickly carpeted, and the bath is large.

Up on the top floor, there is a shower room, designed as a wet room. Next door is a separate cloakroom with loo and basin. On the ground floor, at the bottom of the main stairs, there is also a good-sized cloakroom with loo and basin.

  • Living

This centrally heated home, which was once part of the old farmhouse, is entered through a large oak front door, protected from the winds by a small porch with wooden doors, into a spacious hall which has a rather wonderful Cornish slate floor. On the left is a beautiful square drawing room with high ceilings and large shuttered windows looking out over the gardens. Two large sofas, occasional tables and lamps, a large bookcase and a very special black marble mantle shelf over the open fireplace make this a truly tranquil room. It is also enormous! The fireplace is great for huge warming fires out of season. Children are asked not to take food or drinks into the drawing room.

Outside, and past the wide oak staircase and along the dramatic hallway, you will find the sitting room on the right. Feeling small compared to the drawing room, but still easily seating 8, this is the more casual living space – providing a TV, DVD and video. There is also a small wood burner and bookcase with plenty of games, jigsaws and videos.

  • Kitchen and Dining

The homely warm kitchen is large but not forbidding and is equipped with everything you could ask for: Aga, Caple ceramic hob and oven, a stainless steel sink, a dish washer, an amazing large fridge with an ice cream box, a small freezer, lots of cupboard space, plenty of cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils. There is plenty of work surface and a nice view out onto the enclosed courtyard at the back of the house. Also in the kitchen can be found a long wooden table surrounded by a bench and 6 chairs. It’s perfect for informal dining and should cope fine with a house-full.

For more formal dining and just for the fun of it, Trevethan boasts an imposing dining room. At the end of the hall, the large dining room has a beautiful and heavy oak dining table and chairs for at least twelve people. Here are shuttered windows on two sides - one looking over the front lawn and the other a French window leading to the small walled garden. A large wood burner can be lit for full effect.

  • Facilities

Trevethan has oil central heating throughout, ensuring the house is warm for out-of-season stays. There is a washing machine and tumble-dryer located in the large bathroom at the top of the stairs. A dishwasher is supplied in the kitchen. There is also wireless broadband installed, with boosters throughout the house.

Outside

The gardens lie on different levels and are mostly laid to lawn, with well maintained shrubs and trees all around. There are plenty of nooks and crannies, particularly around the walled garden section of the garden. There is plenty of space to sit and relax as well as for playing games.

Out of the kitchen back door can be found the courtyard where you can breakfast al fresco in the morning sun. The courtyard is a sun trap and a perfect place to enjoy your breakfast. Plenty of garden furniture and a barbecue are available. A gate leads from the courtyard to the garden and the garages. The shed in the courtyard is designed for wet suits to hang whilst not in use and other paraphernalia for the beach to be stored. There is parking for 4 or 5 cars.

Nearby

Trevethan is located half-way up the hill from the beach at Porthcothan. It is the dominant property in the vicinity, with access between large stone walls into the gravel drive. The beach is a short walk down the hill and is a fantastic stretch of sand particularly at low tide.

Porthcothan Stores supplies papers, milk and bread every day of the year and is located on the path from the road through to the beach. Up the hill on the other side (Padstow-side) is the Tredrea pub, providing refreshment and reliable pub food, with amazing views down over the bay from its large terrace.

The beach at Porthcothan is particularly special. At low tide, the beach opens out with huge rock pillars, caves and pools. It is great to explore. It is also very good for swimming and surfing. Around the south headland, and only a short walk from Trevethan, can be found the Trescore Islands, wonderful for swimming in the shallow lagoon and more like the Med in good weather. Good walking can be found further south, towards the fascinating rocky inlet of Porthmear and on to Bedruthan Steps. To the north, the walk along the headland to Treyarnon is particularly beautiful.

Newquay Airport is only 10 minutes away. Padstow for shopping, food and dining is only 10 minutes drive to the north.

We had a wonderful stay as usual in the house and found it just as comfortable and welcoming as ever.

Stayed: 12th Sep 2023

We have had a lovely stay, as usual at Trevethan house, and were particularly pleased to be contacted to allow early access on our arrival day. After a long journey and with several young children this was particularly helpful.

The house was well cleaned and presented on our arrival – please pass on thanks to housekeeping.

All in all, a wonderful stay, and we will look forward to returning next year.
