May Day the Padstow Way
21st April 2017
Celebrate the arrival of Summer in style at Padstow Obby Oss
May Day or Obby Oss Day is the biggest event in Padstow’s calendar. The town is
covered in spring flowers, greenery, ribbons and flags and attracts thousands of
visitors from all over the world. The roots of the festival go back hundreds of years, with
origins in pagan, Celtic and other folk festivals that welcome the departure of winter
and the arrival of summer.
Two Obby Osses, a red and a blue one, are led around the town, coaxed and cajoled
by a ‘Teaser’ and followed by the towns folk dressed in white. Family loyalties decide
whether they follow the Red Oss or the Blue Oss.
Festivities start at 10am when the Blue Oss emerges from its stable. The Red Oss
appears at 11am and from there on, the dancing, singing and merriment continues late into the day.
Make the most of the celebrations and the May day bank holiday by booking one of our nearby houses – we have just reduced all stays over the 1st of May bank holiday weekend by 15%
