Rainy-Days out in North Cornwall (that you’ll actually enjoy)

Despite feeling like sunshine all year round, we can’t guarantee clear blue skies and warm weather for everyone’s holiday! But rainy days in Cornwall need not set you back – they’re an invitation to explore indoor hidden gems, cosy corners and experiences that you may otherwise overlook when it’s the perfect weather to flock to the beach.

So next time the forecast calls for showers, grab your wellies and a raincoat and enjoy North Cornwall in a whole new way! Here’s our guide for what to do when the weather isn’t on your side!

Things to do in Cornwall in a rainy day

Cosy cafes & lunch stops

Even on the wettest days, North Cornwall’s cafes and restaurants are warm refuges. Padstow and nearby beaches all offer great spots to sit back, enjoy a hot drink and watch the rain sweep across the coastline.

  • Padstow harbour cafes – Rick Stein’s cafe, St Petroc’s Bistro or Caffe Rojano all offer warm drinks, cakes and beautiful harbour views
  • Beach-front cafes – Beach Box at Harlyn or Mawgan Porth, or Trevone’s cosy spots are perfect for a late breakfast or lunch, muddy boots, raincoats and all!

2. Indoor attractions & galleries

North Cornwall has plenty of indoor escapes for grey days:

  • Padstow museum – discover the town’s fishing heritage and local history
  • The National Lobster Hatchery – fun for all the family! Not only ideal for learning, a great day out
  • Local art galleries – find Cornish landscapes, coastal photography and handmade crafts in various small cafes across the coastal villages
  • Workshops near Mawgan Porth or Harlyn – some offer pottery making or painting classes for a hands on experience

3. Rainy day walks & coastal drives

(remember to stay away from exposed cliffs during extreme weather)

  • Padstow to Trevone – a short drive or walk along the coast path; stop at various viewpoints to watch waves crash against the cliffs
  • Mawgan Porth to Porthcothan – stormy winter seas make for epic scenery
  • Harlyn Bay – ideal for a quick coastal stroll with cafes nearby – the perfect respite

If walking in the rain isn’t your style, a scenic drive along the coast offers the same views minus the wet rocks

4. Spa, wellness & relaxation

Sometimes a rainy day is an opportunity to treat yourself!

  • Saunas by the Sea at Harlyn, Trevone or Polzeath are a rejuvenating way to take in the coastal views while switching off from the world in their idyllic saunas. Book your slot here: saunas by the sea
  • Wild Wood Spa at Mawgan Porth – immerse yourself in nature in this unique retreat in the woods at Mawgan Porth. With wood fired hot tubs, ice baths and a gorgeous sauna amongst the trees, you’re sure to leave feeling refreshed and at one with nature
  • The Scarlet or Bedruthan Hotel and Spa also offer luxurious spa days and experiences – the perfect opportunity for a pamper! Enjoy a massage, facial or even a dip in the thermal spas and laze the afternoon away…
