5 things to do in North Cornwall this May half term

May is the perfect time to head west and visit the Cornish coast. The temperature is warming up, the days are longer and nature is finally emerging from its winter slumber. The beaches aren’t quite as busy as in the summer, the ubiquitous summer traffic is still a couple of months away and it’s easier to get a table at your favourite restaurant. Here’s a round-up of our 5 top things to do while in Cornwall this May half term.

Take a clifftop walk

With stunning coastal views, dramatic cliffs and a myriad of footpaths, the north coast is a walkers’ paradise. From a short walk between beaches, to a longer trek with a picnic lunch, the month of May is a fabulous time to put those walking boots to good use. Plot a path on Cornwall Council’s interactive map, or use iWalkCornwall for some ready-made inspiration, you won’t be short of routes!

Join in with some Jubilee celebrations

Watch a Jubilee beacon being lit at Trevone or Padstow on 2nd June. Pull up a picnic chair and join in with a street party over the extended bank holiday weekend or maybe even coax the kids into some fancy dress! There’s plenty going on locally. Check out what’s on here.

Spend a day at the beach

Whilst it may not quite be bikini weather, the longer days and the spring warmth makes going to the beach the perfect family day out. Enjoy a frolic in the waves, build a sandcastle, then enjoy a picnic on the sand before watching the sun set on the horizon. With seven beautiful local bays to choose from, you’re sure to find your favourite.

Try out some wild swimming

More and more of us are discovering the benefits of swimming in cold water and there’s no better place to try it out than at some our beautiful local beaches and tidal pools. Take a dip in Treyarnon Bay rock pool, loved by generations of holidaymakers and locals alike. Whilst at Trevone, Tinker Bunny’s Swimming Pool in the rocks even has its own Facebook page. For a more social swim you can even join the Seven Bays Bluetits, our local arm of The Bluetits Chill Swimmers, the global outdoor swimming group whilst you’re here.

Learn to surf

You can’t come to Cornwall and not have a go at surfing. From the complete novice to pro, there’s a beach for any ability. Surf lessons and equipment hire are widely available locally and from Easter onwards most beaches have lifeguard cover. Hire equipment at Constantine Bay Surf Store, Trevone Beach Stores or Porthcothan Bay Stores

Plan a meal out

It’s not a holiday without someone else doing the cooking at least once! North Cornwall has no shortage of places to eat whether it be some street food at one the local vans that travel the area, or some fine dining at one of Rick Stein’s or Paul Ainsworth’s restaurants, there’s plenty of places to go so you can leave the cooking and washing up to someone else while you are here.
